5 Halloween Hazards You May Not Expect

While we are all conscious of keeping our pets away from chocolate and sweets, there are a few other Halloween hazards that might (quite literally) creep up on pet owners. Thankfully, our vets have put together a list of unexpected items to watch out for so you, or your pet, won’t get spooked this spooky season.

1. Glow sticks

Glow sticks contain a chemical called dibutyl phthalate (DBP) that can cause mouth, eye, and skin irritation. But it’s not just the chemical that can cause an issue. Plastic or glass parts of a glow stick can pose physical dangers like choking or intestinal blockage if swallowed!

2. Candles

Some cats can be attracted to candles because the flickered flame triggers their hunting instincts. To our feline friends, a flame is just another thing to bat and chase! Not only can this cause burns, but knocking over a candle can have serious consequences for anyone in the home.

3. Pumpkins

Raw pumpkin is tough, making it difficult for dogs to eat and digest. Large, raw pieces of pumpkin, especially with the rind, can pose a choking hazard too. However, they don’t have to miss out! Cooked pumpkin is a better and safer option. Steaming and/or pureeing pumpkin can be a tasty seasonal treat.

4. Pet costumes

Your pet’s costume shouldn’t restrict their movement or breathing and it must be free from sequins, buttons, or tassels that can be swallowed easily. Keep an eye out for signs of stress too, such as panting, lip licking or flattened ears. If your pet isn’t having fun, it’s time to skip the costume photoshoot.

5. Scary costumes & noisy visitors

Masks, capes, and noisy children can spook even the calmest dogs. If you’re willing to welcome visitors, keep your pets in a separate room with some background noise to comfort them. But remember, if having visitors on fright night is too much for you or your pet, you don’t need to take part. Most trick-or-treaters won’t visit houses without decorations, but you can always put up a sign to further deter visitors.
